The 20th season of Arena Football and fourth on NBC kicks
off the weekend of Sunday, January 29, 2006.
The Free agency period is now in full swing, and you’ll
see many new faces surface on different teams as we do with every
passing season. The AFL’s free agency period is unlike many
other leagues in that big name players are constantly on the move,
which is one of the main reasons why the league is so competitive
every year. Already, Philadelphia has made a huge splash inking
linemen E.J. Burt and Ernest Allen to contracts which will give high
prized QB Tony Graziani more time to find his WR’s downfield.
Nashville has done a tremendous job as well, signing FB/LB Frank
Carter away from Las Vegas and picked up QB Clint Stoerner from
Dallas in a three- team trade. New HC Danny White of the Utah Blaze
wasted no time in solidifying his offense by inking former Arizona
Rattler’s QB Joe Germaine and OS Siaha Burley to contracts.
Due to the catastrophic events that occurred in the Gulf region,
the New Orleans VooDoo had to cancel their 2006 season. This left the
VooDoo players without a place to call their home. Kansas City expected
to get an expansion team in the league for the 2007 season, but will
fast forward a year and take control of the VooDoo franchise. There
will be 15 spots filled up by the VooDoo players currently under
contract, and the new KC franchise is in search of more players, a
team name and mascot.
There’s still more try-outs going on across the league, and
there are sure to be more free agent signings in the coming weeks.
I’ll keep you updated every few weeks, so be sure to check
back on a regular basis to satisfy your off-season AFL fix.
