Rose’s Rant - September 19th, 2005
|
|
I honestly can’t remember the last Saturday of a
college football season that was more entertaining than the
one we just witnessed on the 17th. There were a number of
overtime games, enormous comebacks, and a few woodshed
beatings. Every football fan across the country had to have
fallen asleep with a giant smile on his/her face looking
forward to what the next week had in store.
The day started off with the Louisville and Syracuse games.
Louisville found itself in a 10-0 hole before you could wipe
the morning crust from your eyes, and the Orange found an
offense to match points with the Cavaliers. When all was
said and done, UVA K Connor Hughes nailed the game winning
FG attempt on the last play of the game, and the Cardinals
dropped 63 on the Beavers. Vanderbilt now sits at unheard
of 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC. Might they finally get
back to a bowl for the first time since 1982? Stay
tuned.
Can someone please tell HC Dave Wannstedt to remove himself
from any sort of affiliation with the game of football? He
stinks the joint up everywhere he goes, and everything he
touches turns to compost. He set back the Chicago Bears
organization five year’s, and was never able to do
anything in the Playoffs with numerous talented Dolphin
teams. He’s now managed to get his hands on what
was an above average offense with one of the premiere
QB’s in the country at Pitt, and turned it into an
absolute sieve. They’ve scored a whopping 37 points
combined in their first three games, and lost a pathetic
one to Nebraska, 7-6, this past weekend.
It’s time to go “Wannie”!
The afternoon slate saw a couple of unbelievable games
transpire as both the MSU Spartans and Miami Hurricanes
picked up OT road wins. Both had commanding leads in the
second half only to see the home team rally to tie it up
in regulation. When the dust settled, Miami won it in
triple OT on an intercepted pass, and MSU RB Teague
rambled in for six after ND settled for a FG. The Spartans
played a terrific game, but handled themselves like
children after the fact by supplanting their flag at the
50-yard line proclaiming ND Stadium theirs after winning
its fifth straight in the venue. The Irish have come a
long way in such a short amount of time under new HC
Weiss. No way the Irish fight back from 21 down in the
third quarter under HC Willingham. Be happy Notre Dame
fans, because your future is definitely bright.
The younger Shula ripped the ‘Ol ball coach a new
one as the Tide took every one of the Gamecocks behind
the woodshed and dished out a severe beating. The
Tide’s ground game looked fantastic, and the defense
seemed to come up with a big turnover whenever the Cocks
threatened. You can bet your bottom dollar that HC Spurrier
will remember this one, so file what occurred in this one
away in your memory bank for future match-ups down the
road.
The evening action was capped off with a couple off
heavyweights squaring off in conference action. The Vols
invaded the Swamp looking to win yet again, while new HC
Meyer was introduced to his first taste of SEC football.
The new skipper passed with flying colors as the Gators
won a very boring game 16-7 mostly due in large part to
his defense and an impotent Tennessee offense. BC opened
up ACC play by hosting the Noles and looked to have the
game secured midway through the third, but it all came
apart late and the Eagles fell by a 28-17 count.
FSU’s QB play was still atrocious in the first
half, but picked up to close out the game. In fact,
the Noles defense accounted for two TDs as LB Nicholson
pick-sixed a pair of QB Porter passes, and their
special teams set them up with a short field for
their third score on a blocked punt.
All in all it was a fantastic pigskin weekend. Even my
Bears fooled me and put forth their best offensive output
in three year’s as they pounded the Lions. I’ll
be back next week to talk more about the current events
on the diamond as every division remains wide open in the
AL, and both Wild Card spots will still be undecided.
What a crazy week it will be!
Until then, SLAM YOUR MAN!
